Summer

I love summer. I love the super hot days. I love the birds singing. I love the night sounds of the bugs and frogs. I love the break from schedules. I love our summer adventures. One of those summer adventures includes visiting colleges. I agree that you should also visit colleges during the school year so you can get the vibe of campus, but visiting during the summer allows you to take your time to wander around the quiet campuses without the noise of all the students. Here are a few quick ideas about touring colleges:

  1. Start by making a list of colleges that you and your kid are interested in based on major of study, region, and size.

  2. You don’t need to visit every college. Pick the top 5 and take a road trip.

  3. Schedule meetings with department heads if they are around during the summer. If they are not around, schedule a tour anyway and get to know the school.

  4. Understand this will not be the only trip you make. You are just weeding out the list.

  5. Sometimes after visiting your top 5 you have to start a new list because you just didn’t like any of them. That’s ok! Keep making those lists and keep visiting campuses.

  6. Start the process early. Don’t wait until the summer before your junior year to look because some colleges have cool camps or other summer programs your kid can participate in as early as their freshman year. My oldest kids discovered their major of studies by attending camps and scholar programs.
